WHY A ROOM

An idea stays an idea when nothing is due.

Your day job has something due every week. Your idea doesn't.

Here, something is due every Thursday, and it can be small: one thing, shown to a room that asks how it went.

WHO BRINGS WHAT

An idea, no code.

You know your field's problem better than a developer who has never worked in it. Bring it and start the first version.

Code, no idea.

Years in the field and a new tool you haven't tried? Try it here, where a rough first version is the demo.

A plan, no date.

Plans don't count here. A ship is something a real person used this week.

If you think you're not technical enough to come, that's exactly who it's for.

Everyone builds their own thing. Pairing is for getting unstuck, not for doing someone else's build.

HOW THE HOUR WORKS

One hour. Two halves. One card.

  1. 6:00 Demos.

Two minutes each. Show what you finished this week, or what broke. No slides.

  2. 6:25 Pairs.

You're matched with someone to get unstuck on what didn't ship. Bring the real thing, not a practice problem.

  3. 6:50 Report back.

One sentence per pair: unstuck or not, and what's next.

  4. 6:57 The card.

Write one thing you'll finish by next Thursday. Out by 7.

SHIP THURSDAY

By Thursday {date}, I will ship:

{first name}

FILL IN AFTER THURSDAY

Shipped — someone used it

It broke — that's the demo

What unblocked me:

OK to show my first name on the web page

Next Thursday your card comes back. Kept: it's your demo. Missed: it's what you pair on.

WHAT COUNTS

What counts as a ship

A ship is anything someone used in real work this week:

  1. Anything

A tool, a template, a page, or a spreadsheet that now does the work.

  2. Someone used

You, a coworker or a client.

  3. In real work

Bring something for your work: a tool that saves you an hour, a page that gets a reply, a spreadsheet that sends the invoice.

  4. This week

A broken first version is a valid demo. You don't have to prepare.

Learning something new? Put it on your card.

THE WALL

Every Thursday ends with cards on the wall.

QUESTIONS

What does Ship Thursday cost?

Nothing.

Do I sign up?

No.

Just come.

Do I need to be technical?

No.

A spreadsheet that now does the work counts.

Can I come as a guest?

Yes.

You don't need to be a Kiln member.

First time?

Get there at 5:55 and say so. Bring the thing you're working on and you'll pair tonight. Or just watch, and write your first card at the end.

Will anyone pitch me?

Not in the hour.

A demo shows what you made. It doesn't ask the room for anything.

Next Thursday:
